Alan "Bud" Sellig has been the commissioner of Major League Baseball since the lockout that he and Jerry Reinsdorf engineered in 1994. In that time, the game has seen the Red Sox win two world series titles, the Braves win a Series championship, despite the fact that they dominated the National League in number of postseason appearances in the 90's (the entire decade).
In believe he's responsible for the "Steroid Era" (by ignoring it), robbing Montreal of its only chance at post-season glory, and also taking the Expos and moving them to Washington, D.C. Oh, and shall we talk about the abomination that is not only interleague play, but having the winner of the all-star game determining home field advantage for the world series?
But last night, in Arizona, a National League park, the All-Star game featured a designated hitter. Apparently, robbing Canada of the Expos wasn't bad enough, because there was no one to sing (or even play) "Oh, Canada". The top all-star vote getter this year was Jose Batista of the Toronto (Canada) Bluejays. Dude, where's their anthem?

To make matters worse, Sellig wants to balance the number of teams in both leagues, and have interleague baseball virtually all season long. At first, the idea was novel, but it broke down once teams didn't play the same teams that their division rivals played. I admit having to play the Yankees every year if your the Washington Nationals, but at least every team in the NL East would be doing the same. I think you can tell I'm no fan of all of this. I think in the movie "Bull Durham" summed it up well, when "Crash" Davis declares that "...there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing AstroTurf and the designated hitter."
When I complained about the anthem on Twitter and Facebook, a friend (a Canadian) commented that the only commissioner worse than Sellig is the NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. Bettman is responsible for shutting down hockey for an entire season. I told my friend that I thought that Bettman just been lapped by "Bud".
